In 2018, the number increased to represent over one-half of the eligible chapters, with 155 chapters awarded Superior status and 50 awarded Distinguished status. In 1979, 32 chapters were recognized as Superior and 12 chapters were recognized as Distinguished. Superior status and Distinguished status have consistently been a wonderful incentive for chapters to provide useful value to their members. Award-seeking chapters also increased their efforts in providing service to their local communities. Additionally, technical skills in the areas of accounting, finance, information systems and other topics were introduced or reinforced, helping develop well-rounded professionals. Chapters brought in professionals from local accounting offices to promote professional development by improving soft-skills such as resume building, interviewing techniques, business writing skills and verbal presentation skills. Throughout the 1980s and 90s, chapters who desired to be recognized as Superior or Distinguished improved their chapter programs to achieve these benchmarks of excellence. In 1979, Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co., (now KPMG) began sponsoring the Outstanding Chapter Awards, recognizing award-seeking chapters as Superior and Distinguished.
